The University of the South men's lacrosse team secured the 12-11 double overtime victory over Piedmont University, Tuesday night from Walker Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sewanee got out to a 4-0 lead with 5:15 left in the opening quarter before Piedmont was forced to burn a timeout. 

-After two goals by Piedmont, JoJo Fogarty netted the the fifth goal of the game with a 5-2 lead after one quarter of play. 

-The second quarter was all Lions, as they made it a 9-5 lead after 30 minutes. 

-The Tigers used three goals in the third quarter, led by an Ashton Anton man-up goal with six minutes left in the period to cut the deficit down to 9-8. 

-Trailing 11-9 with five minutes to go, a Joe Orem forced turnover gave Sewanee the ball back, but the Lions defense kep tthe Tigers off the board and forced a turnover. After a turnover that gave the Tigers back the ball, Anton was there again with a goal to make it 11-10 with 55 seconds left in regulation. 

-After Piedmont won the ensuing face off, Davis Gillenwater got the ball back on a forced turnover and ground ball. Seconds later, Phelps Thomas netted the equalizer on a Luke Valentine pass. 

-Going into overtime for the second time in as many games, neither team netted the game-winner. 

-Piedmont did have an opportunity to win on the man-up after the Tigers committed a slashing penalty in the second overtime period. After a saved shot by Flynn Bowman, Sewanee got the ball back and did not relinquish possession. 

-With 1:38 left in the period, Anton struck for the game-winning goal to send the visitors home with the win. 

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ashton Anton led the Tigers with a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in double overtime. 

-Phelps Thomas and JoJo Fogarty each scored twice. 

-Charlie Warren and Drew Perun each won seven face offs, while Warren picked up five ground balls. 

-Alec Jazaeri each forced three turnovers, while Flynn Bowman (1-0) recorded two saves in 36 minutes. 

PIEDMONT KEY STATISTICS
-Michael Anderson recorded three goals and added five ground balls. 

-Johnny Matrona played 66 minutes in goal with 15 saves. 

UP NEXT
The Tigers will next head to Nashville to face Messiah University. The contest will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday from Montgomery Bell Academy.
