Announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday (Jan. 26), the University of the South men's and women's cross country teams were represented on the USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic Awards for the 2022 season.
Along with both men's and women's teams garnering All-Academic status, Janie Schmitt was named as an All-Academic individualist.
The Greenville, South Carolina native took 43rd at the NCAA Regional Championships with a 25:34.3 in the 6K race at Christopher Newport's Lee Hall Mansion course.
She finished her career with a personal-best 6K of 24:44.8 at the Berry Invitational during the 2022 season.
In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 percent of their respective regional championship meet. For the South Region, that includes the top-46 runners.
The SAA saw nine student-athletes from Berry, Centre, Millsaps, Rhodes and Sewanee named All-Academic. In addition to Schmitt's success on the course, the Tiger teams were named All-Academic Teams by the USTFCCCA.
For the women's team, it is the 19th time in program history the team has achieved the academic award (1996-97-2005-06-07-08-09-10-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-20-21-22). Posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.48, the Tigers have acquired this award for the 11th straight season.
Overall, there were 212 women's programs who were named All-Academic Teams for their efforts during the 2022 season.
On the men's side, Sewanee's name has been a part of this award for the 18th staright season (2005-06-07-08-09-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-20-21-22). The University of the South achieved a 3.48 cumulative grade point average.
A total of 189 men's cross country programs were named All-Academic Teams for their efforts during the 2022 season.
In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.1 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, among other qualifiers.
The SAA sees five teams named to All-Academic Teams on both genders, including Berry College, Centre College, Millsaps College, Rhodes College and the University of the South. Below are the team rankings, based on GPA:
