Head coach David Jenkins has announced the 2023 season for the University of the South baseball team. 40 games are on the schedule, with 24 coming from Montgomery Field.
Sewanee's first 13 games of the year will take place at home, beginning with a three-game series with Brescia (Ky.) on Feb. 10-11.
Feb. 17-19 will see Fontbonne (Mo.) come to town for a three-game series. This will be the first time the two teams have met since 2014.
During the weekend of Feb. 24-26, the University of the South will welcome the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Messiah University (Pa.) for a weekend tournament. Sewanee will play UW-Platteville on Friday, Feb. 24. The next day, Platteville and Messiah will play a doubleheader. Sunday, Sewanee will wrap up the weekend with a game with both the Pioneers and Falcons.
Sewanee and UW-Platteville will meet for the first time in program history, and for Messiah, it will be the first time since the 1970s they have met on campus. Additionally, the two teams will meet for the first time since 2007.
Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play starts out with defending tournament champion Birmingham-Southern making the trek to the Domain on March 4-5. The Panthers are currently ranked fourth in the preseason poll administered by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
The season-opening homestand concludes with a midweek contest with Berea (Ky.) on March 8.
For spring break, the Tigers will be making two stops to play eight games. First, Sewanee will travel west to play a three-game SAA series with Hendrix College on March 10-11.
Next, the Tigers will make the short trip to Millington, Tenn., outside Memphis, for the March Madness II tournament, hosted by Rhodes College and USA Stadium. There, Sewanee will face Olivet (Mich.) in a doubleheader on March 14. The next day, Eureka (Ill.) will be the opponent. The tournament concludes on March 17 and 18 with Illinois Wesleyan and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.), respectively.
Sewanee will meet Olivet, Illinois Wesleyan and Merchant Marine for the first time in program history. Additionally, the Purple and White will be meeting Eureka for the first time since the 32-11 win in 2019.
After a week off, the Purple Tigers step back into SAA play and return home for a three-game series with Millsaps College on March 25-26.
Following a midweek trip to Maryville (Tenn.) on March 28, the Tigers return home to welcome the Vikings of Berry College for a series to open the month of April.
Despite the Tigers beginning the month of April at home, seven of the team's next eight games will be away from the mountain. The road swing begins with a midweek contest against Covenant (Ga.) on Lookout Mountain on April 4.
Sewanee will next head to Centre for an Easter Weekend series. The series will take place Friday and Saturday, April 7-8 from Danville, Kentucky.
On April 11, the Tigers will have a quick home game between road series as Maryville makes the return trip.
April 14-15 will see the Tigers face Oglethorpe for a three-game SAA series in Atlanta, and the conference schedule concludes the following weekend, April 22-23, with Rhodes at home.
Sewanee's regular season finale will be a midweek bout with Covenant on April 25 from Montgomery Field.
The 2023 SAA Tournament will take place over two weekends. The top-two teams in the league will host the pod rounds on April 27-29. The SAA Championship Series, a best-of-three, will take place May 6-7 at the highest remaining seed.
David Jenkins enters his ninth season as head coach of the University of the South baseball program.
