The University Of The South Career Days by Antoine and Phillips Lift Women's Basketball to Victory in 2022 Finale

The University of the South women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to knock off Bob Jones University (S.C.), 74-71, Saturday afternoon inside Juhan Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bob Jones pushed the lead out to 10 points, 33-23, midway through the second quarter, but the Tigers cut the deficit to four late in the half. BJU responded with a Shea Dickinson triple to make it a 41-34 lead for the visitors going into the break.

-The Bruins kept the momentum for most of the third quarter with a 10-point lead, 56-46, with 3:31 to go, but the Tigers kept them off the board for the rest of the quarter, finishing the stanza on a 10-0 run to even the score at 56.

-Tied at 58, Faith Humphrey gave the Purple and White its first lead since midway through the first quarter, 59-58, with 5:24 to go in regulation. However, the story was Lilly Phillips, who knocked down three shots from downtown in the quarter.

-Tied at 70 with under a minute to go, Faith Humphrey's jumper was the deciding facro, as the Tigers fended off a late run by the Bruins.

-Saturday's meeting marked the first time in program history these two teams have met. Bob Jones University, who is in the provisional status to NCAA Division III, is the only D-III institution from the state of South Carolina.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Kayla Antoine posted a career day for Tigers, setting a new best in points scored with 31 points on a career-best 13-of-19 from the floor and added 15 rebounds.

-Lilly Phillips improved her career-best in triples with seven and finished with a new high with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added four dimes.

-Faith Humphrey also contriubted eight points, four assists and three thefts on the afternoon.

BOB JONES KEY STATISTICS
-Anna Layne Wylder led the Bruins with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Shea Dickinson posted 13 points and five rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will return to the hardwood in 2023, as they will resume Southern Athletic Association play. Sewanee will battle Hendrix on Friday, Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
