The University Of The South Mourns the Loss of Sewanee Athletics Hall of Famer Larry Majors C'64

The University of the South Department of Athletics is saddened to hear the passing of Larry Majors C'64, son of former coach Shirley Majors and brother of Johnny Majors on Monday morning in Nashville.

Graduating from the Sewanee Academy in 1960, Larry went on to attend the University of the South and played all four seasons under his father and 2004 Sewanee Athletics Hall of Famer Shirley Majors.

"Larry Majors was a vital part of the Sewanee Athletics family. From the storied history of the entire Majors family, through his time as an athlete on campus, and continued by his loyal support of our Tiger student-athletes and all of our varsity teams over his many years as a community member, Larry has exemplified what it means to wear Sewanee purple. He will be missed in our stands but his spirit is still very much alive on the mountain," said Director of Athletics John Shackelford.

Playing all four seasons with the Tigers football team, he was a part of a senior class that went 21-8-3 and never had a losing season during their time on the field.

In 1963, his senior year where he was an alternate captain, the program posted its fourth perfect season in school history with an 8-0 record by outscoring opponents, 275-45. Posting shutouts against Millsaps, Hampden-Sydney (Va.), Randolph-Macon (Va.) and Rhodes, the team was inducted into the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.

Along with his time on the gridiron, Larry was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and also participated on the track and field team.

After graduating from Sewanee with a degree in history, he went on to coach at Cumberland County High School for two seasons, posting a 17-2-2 record, including tying Father Ryan in the state bowl game in 1968.

Larry returned to the Domain in 1970 to coach alongside his father for eight years. He also taught in the Franklin County school system. After retirement, Majors was an advocate for Sewanee Athletics, attending nearly every contest he could.

Larry was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1966 and the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame In 2016.

The family will welcome friends and family at a visitation on Wednesday, Dec. 14 from 5-8 p.m. at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Dec. 15 at All Saints' Chapel with a reception to follow at Convocation Hall.
