The University Of The South Women's Soccer Wins 3 Major Awards, Places 8 on All SAA Teams

On Monday, September 7th, the SAA announced their 2022 All SAA Teams. After winning the regular season championship, Sewanee placed eight total student athletes on the All SAA Teams, and took home three out of the four major awards. Kate Thomson took home Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the SAA First Team. Kylene Monaghan was named Newcomer of the Year and to the All SAA First Team. Greg Cathell took home Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his college coaching career. Junior Leah Atkins was also named to the First Team. Abbie Kleckley and Brianna Fee were named to the All SAA Second Team, and Caroline Pulliam, Lacey Carder, and Ashlyn Richards were all named to the All SAA Honorable Mention team.

Greg Cathell - Coach of the Year: Cathell wins Coach of the Year in his third season at Sewanee. He led the Tigers to a 13-4-2 record, that included a 6-1 SAA record, a nine game win streak, an SAA Regular Season Championship, and an appearance in the SAA Tournament Championship game for the second straight year. 

Kate Thomson - First Team All SAA - Defensive Player of the Year: The sophomore from New Orleans had a standout campaign in her second her year at Sewanee. She played every minute in 14 of 18 games this season for the Tigers, as she was the anchor for the back line for the Tigers. She also got it done on the offensive end, as she scored two goals, both were game winners in back to back games, two wins against Millsaps and Centre. She was also named to the SAA All Tournament team. She is the first Sewanee soccer player to receive Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Kylene Monaghan - First Team All SAA - Newcomer of the Year: In her first year on the Mountain, the Freshman from Blacksburg, VA made an enormous impact. She finished the year with five goals and three assists for and team high 13 points. Her five goals were tied for first on the team, and her three assists were first on the team. Three of her five goals were game winning goals, as her goals against Mount St. Joseph, Maryville, and Belhaven were all the game winners. She is the second Sewanee soccer player to be named Newcomer of the Year. 

Leah Atkins - First Team All SAA: The Junior from Marietta, GA was a force in goal for the Tigers, playing 1142 minutes in the 2022 season. She ranked top in the SAA in goals against average, giving up a conference best .395 goals per game, as well as a league best 87% save percentage. She recorded 34 saves in 2022, and posted seven total shutouts. 

Abbie Kleckley - Second Team All SAA: A Senior midfielder from Birmingham, AL had a big impact in her final season for Sewanee. She played and started in 16 games this season for the Tigers, registering an assist against Birmingham Southern in a 2-0 win. 

Brianna Fee - Second Team All SAA: A Sophomore from Lee's Summit, MO, Fee registered five goals this season, tied for first on the team. She scored three game winning goals this year, as she netted the winners against Oglethorpe, Birmingham Southern, and Millsaps in the SAA Quarterfinals. She scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Birmingham Southern. Fee was second in the SAA in shots taken with 62. This is the second year in a row she has been named All SAA. 

Caroline Pulliam - Honorable Mention All SAA: In her first year with the soccer program, the Sophomore from Charlotte, NC made a huge impact, scoring five goals, with four of those being game winners. She scored the game winner in wins against Covenant, Huntingdon, Hendirx, and in the SAA Semi Finals against Rhodes. She scored two goals against Huntingdon and also had an assist against Hendrix. 

Lacey Carder - Honorable Mention All SAA: The Freshman from Marietta, GA started all 19 games for the Tigers on the back line, playing a key role on defense for the regular season champions. She produced on the offensive end, with an assist against Belhaven. 

Ashlyn Richards - Honorable Mention All SAA: A Sophomore from Charlotte, NC, Richards made an impact in the midfield all season long. She started all 19 games this season, and was a key component in transition and on the defensive end, as well as handling set pieces.
