The University Of The South Volleyball Fends Off Hendrix to Complete Series Sweep

The University of the South volleyball team got out to a 2-0 set lead before Hendrix College attempted to complete the reverse sweep. After forcing a fifth set, the Tigers held the Warriors in check with a 3-2 win, Friday night inside Grove Gymnasium, in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Sewanee stormed out to a 2-0 set lead with 25-15 and 25-19 set scores. Committing just four errors in 101 attacks, the Tigers posted 26 kills and helped Hendrix commit 12 errors.

-In a third set, the Warriors went on an 8-2 run at the end of the set to avoid the shut out, 25-19.

-That momentum stayed with the home team in set number four, cruising to a 25-13 thanks to a 15-4 advantage in kills and a .270 swing percentage for the Warriors (15-5-37).

-In the deciding set, Hendrix evened the set at seven points apiece, but the Purple and White came through down the stretch with eight of the last ten points, including the last five, to win the match.

-After an Ellie Pedersen kill, the Warriors committed five straight attack errors to give the Tigers the dub.

-The Tigers continue to wreak havoc on opposing attackers. Despite Hendrix out-killing Sewanee, 58-47, the Warriors committed 26 errors to the Tigers' 13.  

NOTES AND NUGGETS

-With Friday's victory, Sewanee continues to solidify its seeding for the SAA Tournament. With two matches in league play remaining, the Tigers can finish no worse than fifth in the standings.

-Also, Sewanee swept the regular season series with Hendrix for the first time since the inception of the SAA in 2012. It is the first time since 2000 that Sewanee swept a regular season series with Hendrix. The Tigers split two of the last three years with the Warriors (2018, 2021) prior to 2022.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS

-Laurel Burkhardt led Sewanee with 12 kills on a .250 attack percentage (12-3-36) and added two blocks for 14 points.

-Ashley Crosby had 12.5 points on nine kills and 3.5 blocks, including two solo.

-Ellie Pedersen swung a .400 attack percentage with nine kills on 20 attacks while committing just one error.

-Emma Meyer surpassed 500 assists on the year as she notched her 10th double-double of the year with 19 assists and 11 digs. The freshman also spiked three service aces.

-Adele Cassidy also contributed 13 digs to lead the Tigers.

HENDRIX KEY STATISTICS

-Camryn Presley led all attackers with 22 of the team's 58 kills. Totaling 50 swings on the evening, she committed six errors. Adding two aces and a solo block for 25 points, she also put together a double-double with 17 digs.

-Peyton Nance led all defenders with 24 digs.

UP NEXT

The Tigers' weekend road trip will conclude on Saturday at Rhodes.
