University of the South Sully McCreery Named NCAA Postgraduate Scholar

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced that University of the South graduate Sully McCreery C'22 was named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

McCreery becomes the 35th recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in the history of the University of the South, and he is the first from the baseball program to achieve this award. Additionally, he was one of 21 men's athletes from across all three NCAA Divisions to earn the award from the spring semester.

"Sully earning this award demonstrates on the national level the rigor of Sewanee academics and athletics. This demonstrates to our current athletes and prospective athletes that they can be successful in the classroom and on the athletic field and be recognized for their accomplishments," said Dr. Evan Joslin, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Sewanee's Faculty Athletic Representative.

Graduating with a degree in Finance with a Biology minor, McCreery plans to take a gap year this year and apply for medical school for the 2023-24 academic year.

Sully is a consummate professional with a natural desire to achieve success in everything he does," said David Jenkins, head baseball coach. "Whether it's on a field, golf course or in the classroom, you are going to get his best. He has been an absolute pleasure to work with and a great teammate. He has held a leadership role within the team each of his four years here, being named Captain his senior year. I am really excited for Sully and his future. The medical school he decides to attend will be getting a good one!"

During his four-year career with the Tigers on the diamond, he played in 66 career games with a batting average of .289 and an on-base plus slugging of .796. He is a four-time member of the Southern Athletic Association's Athletic Honor Roll and has been a member of the Dean's List for each semester of his academic career at Sewanee.

"Sully graduated Sewanee with many academic accomplishments. He earned Magna Cum Laude Latin Honors and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa during his senior year. Furthermore, he was inducted into the Order of the Gown in the fall semester of his sophomore year, which is the earliest induction period. In the classroom, Sully has outstanding time management skills and takes on any challenge placed before him," said Joslin.

The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually.  The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring).  Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.

All former student-athletes who earned an undergraduate degree from an NCAA member school are eligible to be nominated by that school for an NCAA graduate degree scholarship, regardless of when they received their undergraduate degree.
