University of the South Men's Tennis Secures Opening Round Win in NCAA Tournament

071e

Box Score St Louis, MO: The University of the South Men's Tennis team secured an opening round win in the NCAA Tournament over Grinnell 5-0 on Friday, May 13th.

How it Happened:

In doubles play, big serving and aggressive returning led regionally ranked duo, Peyton Erck and Quinn Wicklund, to an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles. At #2 doubles, Noah Holsclaw and Liam Baer won 8-4 with dominant net play. Noah and Liam broke serve in the second game of the match and never gave their opponent an opportunity to come back. Playing for the first time together this year, Jackson Davis stepped up to partner with Gil Weston at #3 doubles. Down 3-5, the duo fought back and tied it up with a reflex volley from Jackson Davis to start the come back. To add to the drama, at 6-6 in the match Gil Weston went down with a knee injury. Following a medical timeout, the freshman was able to push through the injury and played an even more aggressive game style with support from Jackson Davis' steady baseline game, leading to a 8-7(7-2) victory. Sewanee swept the doubles to take a 3-0 lead.

Quinn Wicklund struck first in singles with a commanding 6-2,6-3 win. The SAA rookie of the year brought out an old-school style of play that put constant pressure on his opponent through serving and volleying, as well as chipping and charging. Matt Barnett's balanced style of controlled aggression and savvy defensive play wore down his opponent, clinching the match with a 6-2,6-3 victory. A shoutout should be given to Jax Harbour, a player who has been in and out of the starting lineup all year but is always ready to step in for his team when his name is called. Today was no different, with the Sophomore having a 6-2, 5-3 lead before the match was decided.
