FOIA Request to Sewanee-The University Of The South Regarding Chinese National Students on May 14, 2025.

As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we at South Cumberland News have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Sewanee-The University Of The South. This request seeks detailed information concerning Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.

The request specifically asks for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, including their department of study. If this information is protected, we have requested a total number of such students broken down by department. Additionally, we seek records detailing the scholarships these students receive, including the amount and source of each scholarship.

Furthermore, we have asked for a list of recipients affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council and any policies or procedures the university has in place to monitor students—particularly Chinese Nationals—to protect intellectual property and confidential information.

This request is made on behalf of both our publication and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. As members of the media dedicated to gathering and reporting news, access to public records is vital for holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency. We believe that as media professionals, we qualify for a fee waiver in fulfilling this essential role.
